Acidic Stain Removal

Offending Stains:

This includes substances such as Alcohol (Beer, Whiskey, Vodka - although we'd like to think you'd be more careful with such precious materials), berries ( such as Strawberries, Grapes, Blackberries), Fizzy drinks (this includes styles such as Cola, Lemonade, Cream Sodas etc.), food dye, ice cream (I'm afraid this includes all flavours), gravy, jelly, milk, mud, ink, wet or latex paint.

Top Tip: Mix 1/4 teaspoon of white vinegar with a litre of water and rub the affected area gently. The acidity of the vinegar will breakdown the chemical bonds within the sugars that allow the substances to stick to the carpet, forming that pesky stain. The acids in the vinegar also help prevents the dyes within the substances (such as berries) from becoming permanent.

Solvent Stain Removal:

Offending Stains:

Blood, chocolate (this includes milk, dark and white), coffee, mustard, tea, vomit, wine.

Top Tip: Mix 1 tablespoon of ammonia with 1 cup of water (but not on wool or wool-blend carpet - in this case use mild detergent and water). Then with the soft side of a sponge slowly but firmly apply the mixture to the offending stains in a 'dabbing' action before waiting for the stain to slowly dissolve.

OR

Alternative method: Mix chlorine bleach and water in a 1:5 ratio (for every 10ml of chlorine you must use 50ml of water), but on solution-dyed carpets only, such as polypropylene. Bleach will harm other types of carpets; always check with the supplier/retailer if unsure.

Carpet Maintenance

Top Tips:

  1. Wherever possible use a doormat; this is particularly important for high traffic areas where a cover will stop staining and discolouration. Make sure to also clean mats where possible so that moisture and dirt is absorbed by entrants.
  2. Make sure to vacuum your carpet regularly in between washes. This will extend the life of the carpet by stopping any matting in the fibres.
  3. To get rid of indentations left by heavy furniture, place an ice cube in the dent overnight and then absorb the moisture the next morning with a cloth or tissue. The ice will raise the fibres back up, and then a fork can be used to gently raise left over fibres. This technique should not be used on carpets that are unsuitable for water cleaning.
  4. It maybe necessary to to clean your carpet both before and after you have removed these stains. This has the double effect of not only preparing the area for stain removal but also cleaning the area post-removal and providing a good looking finish.
  5. Here at Hire Station we recommend hiring our 240V Domestic Carpet Cleaner which will help provide a professional finish to your carpet when used. Simply click the link below to be taken through to our carpet cleaning machine.
