Step 1

Choosing the blind that best suits your needs. There are 3 types of blinds that you can choose from:

  • Roller Blinds - Roller blinds come in a range of sizes and are easily adjusted to fit your window if needed. They offer a fabric look to your window, rather than wood or metal that you would get from other blinds. Easy operation is also another plus point for roller blinds; they come with a simple cord operation that can be switched from either side if necessary.
  • Venetian Blinds - Venetian blinds have the advantage of controlling the amount of light that comes through the window. These are particularly good in rooms that are in direct sunlight for long periods of the day. They come a range of materials and sizes, including the most popular of wood, metal and PVC.
  • Vertical Blinds - Probably the most popular blind available, these are suited for most windows, including large windows such as patio doors. These can also come in a wide range of fabrics and colours.

Step 2

The next step is deciding where you want your blinds to be placed on your window, either inside or outside the recess. If you choose to place your blind inside the recess it may need to be trimmed to the exact size. If you choose outside, then as long as the blind has sufficient coverage either side, should not require trimming.

Measure the width and drop of the window to see the minimum size of the blind. If you are fitting outside the recess, make sure you leave at least 25mm either side of the window. If you can't find a blind that fits your window, find the size that is slightly larger than required, and trim to size.

Step 3

Next, you need to decide where your blind is going to be hung, place your brackets in place and mark where the screws will be located. Drill holes in the wall and screw the brackets into place using the screws and raw plugs.

Step 4

If the blind is slightly too large to fit within your recess, or too large when hung outside the recess, the blind can be trimmed. Firstly measure the exact width you require for the blind, make sure to allow 40mm for the bracket. The easiest method is to use a hacksaw to cut the roller and weight bar at the bottom of the blind, and sharp scissors or a craft knife to cut the fabric.

Step 5

The final step is to hang the blind over the window. First decide which end you require the cord, insert this end into the bracket first, making sure the blind and cord are fully wound up. Then place the other end of the blind into the opposite bracket. When secure test the blind to make sure the brackets are secure..
